Pipeworks is Belfast’s first gay sauna. They have just uploaded a video, giving the curious a tour of its premises. Pipeworks is (or was) owned and operated by Andre Graham. He is without question, Northern Ireland’s most prominent gay man. He is a millionaire several times over for creating a gay quarter near St Anne’s Cathedral. In 2010 it was reported he, along with his partner, Seamus Sweeney, were the owners of Pipeworks. It is unclear if that is still the case as of this date.

An underground bathhouse was raided in Cairo, which resulted in the arrest of 14 men. These men, who ranged from age 18 to 57, were charged for practicing ‘immorality’ or ‘homosexual acts’. The manager and staff have apparently been detained as well. Though that has not been confirmed.

Cops in Edinburgh, Scotland are cracking down on the underground sex trade industry. First stop, the sauna scene. In March of this year, there was a series of raids covering half of Edinburgh’s 13 saunas. These businesses that were busted had their licenses suspended. Some were allowed to reopen after appealing the decision.

But that is just the start. The cops are now making an official request to city council that all licensed saunas not to provide condoms. Essentially banning condoms from all bathhouses. The thinking is that a readily available condom keeps the sex trade in these saunas alive.
Of course the argument against that thinking is that you can buy condoms anywhere; a drug store, a bathroom, even a bar. And it won’t stop sex in a sauna. It would just increase unsafe sex at the baths.

UPDATE City councilors renewed the public entertainment licences of all five in a public hearing.
They also threw out most of the additional conditions police asked for, including a demand that “no items of a sexual nature” should be on the premises.

This is not a bathhouse per say, but rather a private house party that acts as a bathhouse. Called Thursday Thrust, the creators say this is a gay venue with a difference.
They say it is “geared more to men who want to relax and unwind, meet and mingle with other like-minded men in a friendly and safe environment”. Though I am unsure how that is different from the baths, as they offer the same thing.
But I would assume the difference is the setting. Set in the tranquility and privacy of the Surrey countryside. Thus being very far away from the “hustle & bustle” of the city. Patrick Moote is a bit of a celebrity, but for all the wrong reasons. He is the guy who proposed to his girlfriend on the jumbotron at a basketball game. And got turned down. He later found out the rejection was due to his penis size, it being too small for his girlfriends taste.

Infection rates among gay men in Japan have been steadily increasing. Reports from the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry’s AIDS Surveillance Committee, new reports of HIV patients in Japan totaled 1,500 in 2012. There are a total number of 21,000 patients with HIV/AIDS. Of that number, 6,719 have full-blown AIDS. The remaining, totaling 14,706 are dealing with the virus. Compared to other countries, that might not seem like a lot. But for the Japanese gay community, those numbers are cause for concern.
The problem is that Japan does not place a high priority on HIV prevention and sex education programs in schools. Two programs hope to change that, by going directly into gay saunas across Japan.
Delivery Boys and Adult Delivery go into gay saunas to spread the message of HIV prevention. Counselors go into these bathhouses to offer condoms, safe sex education and information on HIV testing. This is not new, as there is many outreach programs like this in the US. Before these programs, condoms were not readily accessible at Japanese saunas. In fact you had to ask the cashier for a condom, which were behind the counter.
These two programs hope to change that mindset. Says director Junko Araki, “We want to change the image of a condom as being thought of as simply a method of preventing pregnancy to something used in relation to stopping STIs, or for the benefit of one’s health”.
“The idea is not to encourage people to think, ‘Well, there are plenty of free condoms around town so I don’t need to bother buying them,’” he said. “Our strategy is not to simply increase condom use, but also to try and change the way people think and encourage them to get into the habit of buying condoms themselves.”

This story is such a convoluted mess, I don’t were to begin. Joshua Dowholis (pictured below) was standing trial for sexual assault against several men. The bathhouse connection is that he and the victims (more than one) originally met at the baths. The assaults allegedly took place after the group left the baths and headed to Dowholis apartment. All participants were allegedly high on meth.
Enter Derek Welsman, a producer and host of a morning shock radio show. Elected foreman, Welsman swore on a bible that he had no bias towards gays and lesbians. Warned not the discuss any details about the case, Welsman seemed to ignore the instructions by the judge. While not discussing particulars, Welsman made several homophobic remarks about gay sex and bathhouses. Alluding to the fact he was on this particular jury.
The lawyer for Joshua Dowholis is now asking for a judicial inquiry into jury misconduct. Stating that Derek Welsman’s remarks on-air indicate that he has a prejudice against gay people. And had preconceived notions even before the case began.
If misconduct is found, a mistrial may take place. It should be noted that the radio station states their morning show consists of raunchy comedy.

Brand new gay sauna has opened up in Amsterdam, Nieuwezijds Gay Sauna Amsterdam It can accommodate about 250 men, as it is 500 square feet. It is typical of many bathhouses as its amenities include sling room, jacuzzi, glory hole, steam room and much more. The only rule they ask is please no cum in the hot tub, as it will run havoc to the filter.
The sauna is located in a neighbourhood where several brothels are located. Which seems to be the only criticism, as many establishments are worried they might have to close. Customer was found lying dead in a rented room at the H20 Sauna in Manchester England. The irony of this is that he was discovered two hours earlier by a cleaner and nothing was done.
When the bathhouse attendant first encountered this patron, it was assumed he was sleeping. Even though he was lying in a pool of his own feces. So the attendant cleaned him up, sprayed aerosol in the room and left
Two hours later a second attendant came upon the customer, with the realization he was not showing any vital signs
An autopsy would later show the customer had died of high levels of a party drug amphetamine. In addition to caffeine in his system and a pre-existing heart condition.
An inquest is being held to see if this death could have been prevented. Though the coroner said it is unclear when he had died, and if he could have been saved when first discovered.
The inquest is also looking into the health and safety aspect of this particular sauna. The coroner testified he observed blood on the walls and faeces and urine in the sauna area.
In response H20 Sauna assured the inquest new health and safety measures have been placed. Needles (used to inject into penises for erections) and bodily waste and now being disposed into clinical bags. In addition separate cleaning equipment is used for the sauna and kitchen areas.

Man was found dead at 2:35 AM on Sunday morning (January 26) at the East Side Club. Sources told the New York Daily News the cause of death appeared to be drug related, as narcotics were found.
The East Side club disputes that assumption. Front desk worker Dexter Edwards told the New York Daily News the customer had died of a heart attack.

One of the most historic and oldest gay bathhouses in the US is set to shut its doors. Hollywood Spa first opened its doors in 1974 and had not only survived but thrived. But after 40 years the owners cannot afford the rent.
Located at 1650 Ivar Ave, the current landlords want to double the rent of nearly $30,000 per month. The Spa is already six months behind in the rent already.
It is likely to close within the next two months, so if you want to enjoy the Hollywood Spa one last time, you better book your next trip. And fast.

A mistrial has been declared in a case where Justin James Rosdobutko was charged with two counts of manslaughter. Steven Yablonski and Robert Clark died of smoke inhalation at the Aquarius Men’s Bath in Winnipeg in 2009.
Prosecutors allege that James Rosdobutko deliberately set fires in two rooms at the bathhouse. This is not a hate crime, as prosecutors believe he was not targeting anyone specific.
After four years the trial began this week. But mid-week the judge has declared a mistrial. This after new evident was introduced about the cause of the fire.
So the new trial will probably not be underway until 2015. We will keep you posted for any new details.
